The police are now investigating the matter. According to the police, a voice note discovered after his supposed suicide revealed that Nitin Desai expressed dissatisfaction with a financial services company and that his business owed money. He also reportedly stated that he had travelled a great distance and could not continue any longer.
During their investigation into the suicide, Raigad police in Maharashtra discovered 11 audio recordings on a voice recorder that was found in Desai's office. According to an official, one of the recordings features Desai expressing that his company was unable to recover from its financial crisis due to the methods used by the financial services firm. The recordings varied in length from four to twenty minutes, and some of them included Nitin sharing his life story. He was 57 years old at the time of his death.
It is expected that the financial services firm mentioned in the note will be questioned by the police, according to the speaker. The company owned by Nitin had failed to repay a loan of Rs 252 crore to its creditors, leading the National Company Law Tribunal's Mumbai bench to commence insolvency proceedings against it. In 2016 and 2018, ND's Art World Pvt Ltd, owned by Nitin, had taken two loans totalling Rs 185 crore from ECL Finance. However, repayment issues began in January 2020.
On Thursday, during a session of the state Assembly, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that an investigation would be conducted into the private lending firm that provided a loan to Nitin. The aim is to determine if Nitin was charged high interest and if he was under any mental stress. The police official also stated that the voice notes referred to four individuals.
He made a plea to the government to acquire his Karjat studio and transform it into a space for emerging artists. According to reports, he had experienced various obstacles throughout his life and had reached a point where he could no longer continue. He allegedly stated in an audio recording that he had come to the end of his journey and could not take any more steps forward.
On Wednesday morning, Nitin Desai was found dead in his Karjat apartment. During his 30-year career, he closely worked with many renowned directors such as Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Rajkumar Hirani, and Ashutosh Gowariker as an art director in films like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Lagaan, Jodhaa Akbar, and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. Additionally, he designed sets for popular television shows including Kaun Banega Crorepati, Kamzor Kadi Kaun, Dus ka Dum, and Sacch ka Saamna.
