A fire in Mahanoy City on Friday morning destroyed a building and injured one person.

The fire broke out around 6:40am when emergency personnel were called to the 400 Block of West Market Street in Mahanoy City for a structure fire.

As personnel responded a column of smoke was visible and the first to arrive reported a fully involved working fire.

The fire engulfed the 2nd and 3rd floors of 401 West Market.

Additional alarms were issued calling in additional manpower to the scene from around the Mahanoy City area.  Firefighters dealt with unsafe conditions and had to fight the fire defensively from the exterior.

Within an hour, the fire was brought under control, but the entire building was destroyed and beginning to collapse.

According to Mahanoy City Fire Lieutenant Dave Truskowsky, 3 people were displaced by the fire and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.  One person was also reported to have suffered injuries.

A Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal was requested to the scene to investigate the cause.

Centre and Market Streets were closed during the incident.  Most apparatus were cleared of the scene by 9:00am.
